Chamaecyparis nootkatensis ‘Glauca Pendula’ – This Alaska Cedar is character-rich tree with relaxed lateral branches graced with dangling gray-green foliage. A most graceful tree, the Nootka Cypress (another common moniker) provides a gentle, casual and easy elegance. Slow growing, distinctive Nootka Falsecypress (oi… another common name) will top off at about 14 to 15 feet by 5 feet in 10 years. It will continue growing, of course, attaining a height of 30 feet or taller with a spread at the base of 12 to 18 feet gradually growing narrower to its wispy top. In the wild this magnificent tree can stretch from 60 to 90 feet tall. The bark of all Chamaecyparis becomes increasingly beautiful with age and girth; large rich brown to gray-brown scales eventually peel away from the trunk and older branches. This is a tree with longevity as a single specimen can live for 1,000 years. The species originates in southeast Alaska south into northern California. Plant in fertile loam that holds moisture between rains. Site it well – “right plant, right spot” – or provide extra water during periods of drought. Established potted Alaska Cedar, cutting grown.
